Les ingénieurs du Génie civil ont pour mission de concevoir, de planifier, et de superviser la construction et la maintenance de notre environnement physique. Ceci comporte les bâtiments, les routes, les ponts, les tunnels, les aérogares, les ports maritimes, les barrages et les systèmes de distribution d’eau et d’assainissement. Plusieurs facteurs doivent être pris en compte dans le processus de conception, depuis les considérations de coût et de durée de vie théorique d’un projet, jusqu’aux lois et règlements en vigueur, sans oublier les risques naturels, tels que les tremblements de terre. Le Génie civil, considéré comme l’une des plus anciennes disciplines d’Ingénierie, englobe plusieurs spécialités. A cause des grandes différences constatées dans les pratiques des ingénieurs de Génie civil, chaque ingénieur doit se spécialiser dans un domaine particulier. Les spécialités les plus importantes sont l’ingénierie de construction, le transport, les structures, l’environnement et la géotechnique.
Le programme de Génie civil à l’IIHEM est consacré à deux importantes disciplines, qui sont le bâtiment et le transport.
